West MED is a European Union initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the Western Mediterranean.
The Western Mediterranean region attracts the largest number of tourists in the Mediterranean basin. It is also a breeding ground for biodiversity, with 481 marine protected areas, including Natura 2000 sites.
The region faces many problems: general geopolitical instability, increasing urbanisation of coastal areas, overexploitation of fish stocks, marine pollution, etc.
The West MED joint initiative aims to enable the EU and the countries of the Southern rim to work beyond their borders for security and safety, the preservation of ecosystems and the promotion of sustainable blue growth and job creation in the Western Mediterranean.
The 10 associated countries are those of the 5+5 format: Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, Malta, Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia.

In each country, national hubs have been set up to develop and support cooperation projects on the priority themes identified by the initiative, namely :

Maritime cluster development;

Conservation and restoration of biodiversity and marine habitats

Sustainable consumption and production;

Sustainable development of fisheries, aquaculture and coastal communities

Skills development and circulation;

Maritime safety and marine pollution response.
